Using Contests as a Marketing Strategy

We have a reading contest at the SALC – have had for the past two sessions now – and it has definitely increased the awareness of the books we have for checkout and I believe it has encouraged some of our students to increase the time they spend reading for pleasure (or perhaps even initiating them into the world of reading for pleasure).

I’d like to get more people to follow us on Facebook and Twitter – I’ve been trying to up the ante by posting there frequently and by posting links to sites or ideas that I find really helpful, entertaining or useful. However, at present we’ve only got 97 Facebook followers and 18 Twitter followers…..and a student population of almost 500 (current – if we count former we’d be in the thousands).

So, I’m toying with the idea of having an online contest, perhaps with user-generated content like photos or videos to get people onto the Twitter and Facebook pages as well as get them invested in us as a way to expand their learning base.
